What we have to do is build a multi-dimensional learning framework with spaces in it where people solve problems, make things, discover and create.
Most classrooms have been constructed to be cloistered and controllable ignoring the tangled webs our minds have evolved, specifically to engage, and that will be crucial for learners who will have to address ‘wicked’ problems, like climate change. The isolation and linearity of much teaching has been threatened by technologies that enable students to connect to information and people not previously possible which has led to teacher frustration and confusion. Over 100 years ago, physicists faced a similar problem: the notion that the universe could be divided into a set of isolated and deterministic building-blocks began to crumble, challenged by new understandings that revealed complicated interdependencies that ultimately gave us the energetic concepts of quantum mechanics. With a humorous and non-technical approach, this presentation will explore ways to reimagine teaching and learning to offer a new way to chart the path for education.
